STOKES BAY

Public BBQ

Stokes Bay offers a stunning beach accessed through a unique walk through rock caves, creating a memorable coastal experience on Kangaroo Island's north coast. The campground itself divides opinions sharply. Kangaroos roam freely throughout the site, often approaching campers with curiosity. The Rockpool Cafe sits conveniently next door. The unpowered camping area lacks basic facilities, with no drinkable water for washing, no showers, and only public toilets available. Many visitors report overcrowding issues, particularly with long-term caravans packed closely together, creating noise from generators and TVs that overwhelms the natural environment. Tent campers often find conditions challenging due to limited space between sites. However, timing matters, as some visitors during quieter periods enjoyed peaceful stays with minimal neighbours. The location serves well as a base for exploring the north coast, with koalas occasionally spotted in pine trees at the campground edge and easy access to Emu Bay and Western River. The beach itself remains the highlight, with comfort fires permitted and plenty of day visitors drawn to the area.
